2025 TEAM REFEREE Guidelines -- PROPOSED
(updated 6/30/2025)
Our games cannot proceed without referees. A game without referees is unsafe and fails to teach our players the proper aspects of the game. To ensure games are staffed with trained referee teams ALL teams (except 6U and below) must provide at least one designated team referee (2 or 3 eases scheduling). Encourage your parents to become referees! We will train them!
U7/U8 Referees:
This year, EACH team's referee will be responsible for refereeing their home matches. It is strongly urged that the Away Team's Referee be present in uniform to record the Away Team's Goals and Substitutions, and to fill in should any issues arise.
Each Referee will handle game cards for their own teams, recording scores, substitutions, and goalkeeper "quarters". Referees will also keep a separate record of goals scored in a match wallet, check the game cards to see that they match, sign the game cards, and at the end of the match turn the game cards in to the referee tent.
While U7 Teams this year are not require to recruit a Referee, the Team Coaches will officiate the matches. A Volunteer would help the Team tremendously so the Coach can coach from the touchline during matches.
Team Referee Points Policy
To provide incentives for teams to provide team referees, team referee points will be included in determining which teams receive trophies and/or advance to Area Playoffs. There is a link below to the Referee Points earned so far this Season.
CORE 14U Referees:
The Team Referee System, follows a “provide-what-you-use” approach. In other words, each week, every team “uses” 1.5 referee resources per game (3 referees per game divided by two teams).
Referee points are no longer added to team game points earned in the Division Standings. They will be included with the standings for informational purposes.
Team Referees will receive Referee Points for Referee Volunteering as follows:
- Referee Points are earned by self-scheduling including inputting the Team Name, showing up, and Refereeing. Walk-up are also accepted, but your Team Name must be included in your Profile on the Self-Scheduling System.
- A team must earn at least 10 Referee Points during the season to qualify for area playoffs and to be awarded trophies.
- Teams can earn a maximum of 15 Referee Points during the season.
- Maximum Accumulated Team Referee Points during the season is limited to "X + 5", where X is the Week Number (yes, I am a Math person). This allows teams to catch up on Referee Points during the season but it also prevents front-loading. Referees are needed every single week.
- Referee Points can be earned by as many different referees as you have representing your team (limited by the rule above).
- A Referee will earn 2 Referee Points for their team for completing a Center Referee assignment and 1 Referee Point for completing an Assistant Referee assignment. We encourage referees to "work the center." We will train you!
- If all 10U/12U Assistant Referee Spots are filled for a particular Saturday, 1 Referee Point will be earned to Referees who sign up for a “stand-by” spot and show up to stand by (see below).
- Referee Points can also be earned by Referees during Region 9’s Adult League matches that play on Sundays. These spots require more experience, though. Every effort should be made to fulfill your points on Saturdays. However if all slots are full on Saturday, Sundays are an option. Self-Scheduling ion Sunday is mandatory, else I will not know about it.
- A Season-ending Tournament to determine Area Playoff Invitees will occur on the Final Saturday. This might take more than one weekend depending on the number of teams playing during the Season.
Important: Team Referee Points will be updated each week. If there are any challenges to the published referee points, those challenges must be raised with the referee staff.
CORE 10U/12U Team Referees:
This 2024 season will be split into a "Regular Season" of seven weeks and a Region Tournament of three weeks PLUS a Final Sunday.
Teams must accumulate the minimum number of Team Referee Points to be eligible for the Region Tournament. Otherwise, the final three weeks for those teams will simply be "friendly" matches.
- Referee Points are earned by self-scheduling including inputting the Team Name, showing up, and Refereeing. Walk-up are also accepted, but your Team Name must be included in your Profile on the Self-Scheduling System.
- A team must earn at least 10 Referee Points during the season to qualify for the Final Sunday, to be invited to Area 10E Playoffs, and to earn end-of-season awards.
- Teams must earn at least 3 of those Referee Points during the Region Tournament to Advance to the Bracket/Knockouts: During the Region Tournament, ONE point per Center, ONE point per A.R. are earned (different during Regular Season), because we need these matches with full Referee Teams, and giving two points for Centers will leave us short.
- Teams can earn a maximum of 15 referee points during the Season. Volunteering for more is encouraged!
- Maximum accumulated team referee points during the Regular Season is limited to "X + 5", where X is the Week Number (yes, I am a Math person). This allows teams to catch up on referee points during the Regular Season, AND it also prevents too much front-loading. Referees are needed every single week.
- Referee points can be earned by as many different Referees as you have representing your team (limited by the rule above).
- A referee will earn 2 Referee Points for their team for completing a Center Referee assignment and 1 Referee Point for completing an Assistant Referee (A.R.) assignment during the Regular Season. We encourage referees to "work the center." We will train you!
- If all 10U/12U Assistant Referee Spots are filled for a particular Saturday, 1 Referee Point can be earned by Team Referees who self-schedule for a “stand-by” spot and show up to stand by (see below).
- Referee Points can also be earned by referees during Region 9’s Adult League matches that play on Sundays. These spots require more experience, though. Every effort should be made to fulfill your points on Saturdays. However, if all slots are full on Saturday, then Sundays are an option.
- Referee Points during the Regular Season are used as the FIRST tiebreaker to determine seeding for the Region Tournament.
AYSO United Team Referees:
AYSO United teams "pay back to the Region" by volunteering as referees.
The AYSO United Director will provide the requirements of the teams.
Stand-by Spots:
Stand-By Spots are opened once all other similar slots are filled.
There are three stand-by spots for each U10 match time. The "center referee" spot on The System is not only for center referees.
Signing up for a Stand-By Spot is worth 1 Referee Point.
Stand-by Referees shall stay at the tent and be available as needed for the whole time the spot requires. Needs can include:
Filling in for a referee who doesn't show.
Filling in for a referee who gets injured.
Being responsible for tent administration when Staff is away.
Getting more ice and water from the Snack Shack.
Handing out water for referees at their halftimes.
