Referee Training 2024

Last Updated 6/13/2024

Referees will not be allowed to volunteer as referees, and Referee badges cannot be issued, until Safe Haven, Concussion Awareness Sudden Cardiac Arrest, and SafeSport training courses, Referee Training, and fingerprinting have been completed.

REQUIRED Pre-Requisites to Volunteer as a Referee, Coach, Assistant Coach, Team Manager or Board Member!
1. Registration as an AYSO Volunteer via Sports Connect (required annually) (Step A below).
2. Background check (18+ years old) This MUST be completed before you can enroll in any Training
3. AYSO Safety Courses Online: Safe Haven,  Concussion Awareness, Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). (One-time, for now). See Step B) below.
4. SafeSport. (18+ years old) required annually. There is a separate process for SafeSport.
See Step B) below.
5. Fingerprinting: one-time requirement (18+ years old).
All referees (18+ years old) need to be fingerprinted per State Law. This is a one-time effort.
AYSO requires us to use a specific AYSO-approved fingerprinting company to process fingerprinting. If you've been fingerprinted for your work or business, that will not count! AYSO needs to collect the fingerprinting information their own way! Advanced registration is required for a specific time range for the day of fingerprinting.  See Step C) below.
6. AYSO Referee Training:
At Region 9, Referees must complete the Regional Referee Online Training AND attend a Field (Companion) Course. See Step D) below.

7. Please attend the New Referee Meeting Wednesday August 28, 7PM, at Los Robles Greens. We will go over how to assign yourself matches on the Self-Scheduling System, and the Referee Points System, and other fun topics!

DETAILS

STEP A)
Register as an AYSO Volunteer in Sport Connect as REFEREE, and complete the background check.
IMPORTANT:
1.
If you do not plan to be volunteer as a Team Referee, PLEASE CHOOSE a U16 or U19 Division when you register! If you choose otherwise, you will could be assigned to a team, and our policy is to have teams find a volunteer within the team.

2. If you do plan to be volunteer as a Team Referee, PLEASE CHOOSE the Division(s) that your player(s) will be in when you register! That way, you will be assigned to that player's team(s). Do note that your Volunteer Account must be, in SportsConnect, connected to your player!! We often have referees with different last names of the player, or, worse, referees with the SAME name as players not related to them! This creates a lot of confusion when forming teams.

Be sure that you have eSigned the application! Detailed instructions can be found on the Region 9 website at
https://www.ayso9.org/Default.aspx?tabid=866537

Youth Referees (younger than age 18) need to complete a separate Youth Volunteer Application, to be electronically signed by a parent or legal guardian.

STEP B)

Complete Safe HavenConcussion Awareness , and Sudden Cardiac Arrest training online using the  AYSOU training website.
ALL Referees must complete these online courses.

Safesport - SafeSport has a different method for signing up and taking from the courses above.  Click here for detailed instructions on how to register for Safesport, to ensure that you get AYSO credit for completing the online course.
Only Adult Referees (those 18+) must complete these online courses.

STEP C)

Get fingerprinted by an AYSO-approved vendor. If you've been fingerprinted for other public duties (teacher attorney, etc.), that will NOT do! Fingerprinting costs money, but we (Region 9) will pay for AYSO-approved fingerprinting (not any other, though.)
2024: Fingerprinting will be available at the New Referee Meeting on August 28 at Los Robles Greens starting at 6PM.
Only Adult Referees (those 18+) must get fingerprinted.

Click here for how to register for fingerprinting. (Sites, dates, and times in the surrounding area pop up on Step 3.).

STEP D)

 7U/8U Referee Training (CLICK HERE)
or
10U/12U/14U Referee Training (CLICK HERE).

If you are unable to attend any of the available Referee courses offered by Region 9, you may also complete the required training at a neighboring AYSO Region (for 10U/12U/14U Regional Referee courses only! We will arrange a Field Course for 7U and 8U Referees at your player's Practice, as it will be different from other Regions). Check eTrainu for information about Referee Training in our neighboring Regions (in case you are not able to attend any of the Region 9 training).
See a screen shot below which shows you how to find training in another Region.
